Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Multi-Agency Education Project

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI for short) are a string of volcanic islands, coral atolls, submerged banks and seamounts that are home to more than 7,000 species, including marine mammals, fishes, sea turtles, birds, and invertebrates. Many are rare, threatened or endangered. At least one quarter are endemic, found nowhere else on Earth.

The NWHI Multi-Agency Education Project is a collaborative effort of a large number of agencies and organizations, all working together to care for this special place and bring it to the public through education and outreach efforts.

LILT is hosting the project website, www.hawaiianatolls.org, as a community service. As the project develops we will also be providing technologies to support online interaction between students, teachers, scientists and others who want to learn from and care for these unique ecosystems.
