Job Openings: Graduate Research AssistantshipsStatus: These positions have been filledIn general, LILT seeks graduate students interested in the following areas (listed alphabetically):
The following projects are active: Collaborative Representations (funded through 2005): Explore new ways to facilitate collaborative learning through software tools in which users build, manipulate and discuss representations, including disciplinary representations (e.g., data displays, designed artifacts), discourse representations (e.g., threaded discussion), and knowledge representations (e.g., concept maps, argument maps). Empirical research will initially focus on how the representations support discourse coherence and convergence. Subsequently the focus will shift to how these tools can be integrated into classwork and fieldwork in a K-12 school setting, possibly involving handheld computers, PCs and large screen displays. Educational applications will focus on ecological issues (e.g., http://hawaiianatolls.org or http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/pods/). Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities (funded through 2006): Construct a virtual community center providing resources and facilitating collaborations in support of K-12 science, math and technology (SMT) education in Hawaii's rural schools. Users contribute educational resources and resource descriptions and discuss how to use these resources in their SMT classrooms. A telementoring center matches mentors to mentees and manages communication and workloads. Virtual workspaces support students, teachers, scientists, and other community members collaborating on SMT projects with a focus on "global environmental sciences situated locally" in economic development, habitat restoration, and environmental protection. The anticipated opening may start on about August 25, 2003 and no later than January 2, 2004. Note: positions can only be offered to students admitted to a UH graduate degree program.
