HistoryLILT was founded in the fall of 1998 by its director, Dan Suthers, when he joined ICS. LILT was modeled in part on Advanced Cognitive Tools for Learning, a research group that Dan Suthers managed for Alan Lesgold at the Learning Research and Development Center, University of Pittsburgh from 1993-1998. In 1999, Chris Hundhausen joined LILT as a Postdoctoral associate under Suthers' Learning and Intelligent Systems funding. In 2000, Chris became an assistant professor in ICS and the assistant director of LILT, and we hired his wife Laura Girardeau, as a full time researcher. Early in 2001, Dan Suthers was awarded a 5-year, $400K NSF CAREER grant for work on Collaborative Representations. That summer we received word that Vi Harada and Dan Suthers, in collaboration with the Hawaii Department of Education, had been awarded a 5-year, $6 million Rural Systemic Initiative grant for Hawaii Networked Learning Communities. We moved into our new suite, POST 309, to accomodate our growing team. A few years of frenzied work followed ... see the news archive for details ... during this time Chris also was awarded a CAREER grant! In the Fall of 2003, Chris Hundhausen and Laura Girardeau left for the open spaces of eastern Washington State, and we hired two more graduate students to fill in for Laura. |
