The Last NSF Rural Systemic Initiative PI/PD Meeting

Vicki Kajioka, Dan Suthers and Vi Harada in the lounge of Pikes Waterfront Lodge, FairbanksThe last PI/PD meeting of the NSF Rural Systemic Initiative was hosted by the Alaska RSI / Alaska Federation of Natives in Fairbanks, Alaska. LILT PIs Violet Harada and Dan Suthers attended, along with our Hawai`i DOE colleage Vicki Kajioka, to report on our own RSI, Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities, and to learn from others. That's us at Pikes Waterfront lodge.

The RSI program has been going strong for 10 years now, but has been replaced by new programs such as the Math and Science Partnerships. Indigenous and Place-based education was a strong theme in the RSI, and in fact a theme of the Alaska meeting was "Education Indigenous to Place." The Alaska RSI has been a pioneer in development of standards and guidelines for culturally sensitive education.

In addition to two days of presentations and discussion, our hosts treated us to several cultural events, including an Athabascan potlatch at which we were entertained by Pamyua (lead image on home page), a Yup'ik Eskimo band, as well as other musicians; and a Salmon Bake where our colleagues and their families performed some traditional dances (below). The NSF brass were also in attendance (below).
