We've been busy working with rural schools ...

No news has been posted here for over a year, but that does not mean nothing had been happening -- quite the opposite!

During the past year, Dan Suthers applied for and obtained tenure, and is now associate professor at UH. There have been many staff changes: we'll introduce the new LILT members in an upcoming story. We've continued an active research program in our laboratory on the Collaborative Representations grant, and Dan had a busy year last year with conferences (co-organizing CSCL and ICCE) and invited talks (at AI&ED, Ed-Media, and the Tuebingen summer school).

But mostly we have been very busy on our Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities effort, partnering with rural schools designing ecologically and culturally situated inquiry units in science and math education, and developing collaborative technologies to support everyone in this work. We're also working with Diane Banks at Kalama Intermediate School (Makawao, Maui) on classroom use of the Belvedere software.

Of course this means quite a bit of travel in the islands. Sometimes we are tempted to take short-cuts, as pictured below on our way to Kalama!
