A Hot Summer at LILT!

Yes, things have been heating up here! Pele put on a show on the Big Island -- Dan took off long enough to get up close for this picture. But mostly we have been working hard on several projects ...

Studies of Representational Guidance

Dan, Chris and Laura have been analyzing data for the Representational Guidance study and writing journal publications and several related conference publications. We have nice data showing that representational affordances affect collaborative learning processes, though not always in the ways we expected!

Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities

The previous news item reported on our summer workshop with teachers and development of the first Hawai`i Networked Learning Communities web site. We are now embedding interactive facilities based on the Slashdot.org concept into this website. The new version (not released yet) will enable all HNLC community members to contribute and discuss resources and ideas. Wil Doane is responsible for this work.

Software for Online Artifact Centered Discourse

We are designing and implementing three distinct online environments for discussions that focus on online documents.

Bruce Harris has been improving Kukakuka for release. Viil Lid is working on a new system intended to support ICS project-based classes. This system will allow indexing to discussions by artifact referenced as well as by discussion topics. It will be first used in Dan's fall ICS 667 course. Our visiting researcher, Toshiyuki Takeda, is returning to Japan, after having completed several iterations of the Pink system, his version of artifact-centered discourse. Toshi will be using Pink for various applications in Japan.

Belvedere (Knowledge Mapping Software)

Bin Ma is finishing final releases of Belvedere 3 (stand-alone and networked versions). The networked version supports discussion of evidence maps via a standard newsgroup. David Burger is finishing the first public release of Belvedere 4, which supports multiple types of models as well as multiple views. This will be the first open source version of Belvedere! Watch http://belvedere.sourceforge.net/ (which we are still editing).

Other Events

Dan has been meeting with teacher consultants for the Collaborative Representations project. They are advising us on the Belvedere and Kukakuka work, and will be trying our products in the classroom.

Dan has also been participating in an interagency collaboration for education related to scientific voyages to the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. We are hosting a shared web site that will be announced here soon.

Chris has hired two new RAs for his CAREER grant project on algorithm design through collaborative algorithm visualization.

We had an unwelcome "visitor" and learned a lot about Solaris security. This server has been entirely upgraded thanks to the hard work of Bruce and Dan.
