Hundhausen
wins CAREER Award
Christopher Hundhausen, assistant director of LILT and an assistant
professor in the Information and Computer Sciences Department, recently
won a prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career
Development (CAREER) award. This is the second such award to LILT
faculty: last year LILT director Dan Suthers received the award.
With his award, Hundhausen will develop and empirically evaluate
of a new approach to teaching computer algorithms in undergraduate
computer science classrooms. Based on the studio-based teaching paradigm
used in architecture, his novel approach revolves around problem-based
"studio" exercises in which students use electronic whiteboards and
sketch-based visualization software both to create their own visualizations
of the computer algorithms under study, and to present those visualizations
to their peers and instructor for feedback and discussion.
NSF established the CAREER program in 1995 to help top performing
junior faculty scientists and engineers simultaneously develop their
contributions and commitment to research and education. The CAREER
award is NSF's most prestigious award for junior faculty members.
