The purpose of this assignment:
- To determine what your group projects will be.
- To get a little practice writing project proposals and justifying
usability methodologies to your boss!
Please do the following:
- Read the Project Requirements.
- Think of a project idea and find an appropriate number of partners.
- Imagine that you are in a software or hardware development company
(as appropriate for your project). Make up a name for the company.
As a group, write a letter to your "boss" outlining
the project, including why it is needed and how you would like
to begin work.
- You may want to use the Root
Concept as a guide to decide what to say in the letter:
indicate the problem you are trying to solve; why you
think a technology solution will solve it (and therefore
sell well); and who the potential customers and users
are. However, don't just turn in the root concept document:
write a memo appropriate for your boss!
- Also try to convince your boss that early investment in
usability (whether scenario-based design, usage-centered design,
user-centered design, etc.) is worthwhile.
Write this letter in plain language and with the style and quality
that you would use for a real proposal to a real boss (I'll evaluate
it on that basis).
- Start a project web site and post the letter there (as a sub-page,
not on the home page).
- Submit the letter individually in Assignment 7 in
disCourse.
- By responding individually, you are affirming that you
personally are committed to the project (and didn't just
have your name put on it by someone else).
- Until I know who wants to work with whom I can't create
groups, so you can't submit assignments as a group!
- I will respond with my approval or disapproval.
- Meanwhile ...
- Review your group members' proposals to see whether your
group members have the same vision for the project.
- Read the other proposals to see whether there are any similar
to your own.
- You may also wish to gain participation credit by commenting
on others' proposals.
Due 3/2 (but preferably 3/1)
