Assignment 3: Activity (Conceptual) Design for Collaborative Calendars

The purpose of this assignment:

Activity design is the first step of the design process under both SBD (Rosson & Carroll) and UCD (Constantine & Lockwood). We will try the major techniques of each approaach, to comprare them and understand their relative merits.

Please do the following:

You should turn this work in as individuals, but may work with up to 2 other students to discuss the assignment and try the methods on each other. If you work in a group, do NOT divide up the tasks such that each student only does part of the work. You should try ALL techniques as a group, so that everyone has personally been involved in the application of each technique. Then you can each modify the group work as you wish and prepare your individual presentation of that work.

  1. Read chapter 3 of Rosson & Carroll, Ch. 5 of Constantine & Lockwood, and the online paper Constantine & Lockwood (2000): Structure and Style in Use Cases for User Interface Design. (All of their online papers are of high quality and go beyond the thinking in their book.)

  2. Using the requirements analysis that you did for Assignment 2, do the following for the Collaborative Calendars application:
    • Metaphors:
      • Identify two metaphors for collaborative calendaring and write a few implications of each metaphor (see page 93 of Rosson & Carroll).
    • Activity Scenario and Claims Analysis:
      • Write two scenarios of your system being used
      • Derive from these scenarios a claims chart that shows the features you propose to include in the solution and their positive and negative aspects.
    • Task Model in Essential Use Cases
      • Write at least two essential use cases to capture the kind of activity you want to be able to support.

Be careful to abstract away from implementation decisions in the Activity Scenario and Essential Use Cases.

Also, why did this step start out in boldface red font? Because you should build on your prior work. It does not make any sense to do some requirements or design work and then ignore it!

  3. Make a web page that tells the story of your activity design and includes all of the documents you created. Write a page (paragraph or two) summarizing your view of the utility of the methods, and how they might profitably be combined together on future projects.

Please make this a different web page than the one for Assignment 2. We don't want to have too much on a page. However, your Assignment 3 pages should have a link to your Assignment 2 page so we can see how the two relate.

  4. Submit your assignment in disCourse (the URL of your page will be the artifact).
  5. Comment on the most recent submission.
