Assignment 1: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Objectives

The point of this assignment is to:

  • become familiar with some design principles and rules, and their utility and limitations.
  • help us start thinking critically about interface designs
  • collect some examples that we may draw upon during the course
  • get us started with posting assignments on web pages and discussing them in disCourse

Action

  1. Read Chapter 3 of Constantine and Lockwood (some of this is also in the “Principal Principles” sidebar in the Constantine and Lockwood article "What Users Want"). Also skim the Smith & Mosier collection of guidelines.

  2. Find examples of an interface or system that ...
    • ... follows a guideline or design rule successfully
    • ... follows a guideline or design rule unsuccessfully
    • ... violates a guideline or design rule unsuccessfully!
    • ... violates a guideline or design rule successfully!!
"Successfully" means the system is effective or usable, not just that it succeeded in following or violating the rule.
  3. Make screen dumps of the examples and put them in a web page with a brief explanation of
    • the guideline, principle or rule in question; and
    • whether it follows or breaks the guideline successfully or unsuccessfully in terms of usability, and why you think so.

  4. Post your assignment as a new thread in the Assignment 1 disCourse discussion (the URL of your page will be the artifact).
  5. Comment on the assignment of the person who posted before you, and any others you have something to say about.
