Readings

Required Readings

The following textbook is required. It is a reasonable undergraduate level textbook on HCI (in spite of the title "beyond" HCI).

Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction
Preece, Rogers, & Sharp
John Wiley & Sons Inc. 2002
ISBN 0-471-49278-7 (paper)

Other required readings (in electronic or handout form) may be added.

Additional Suggested Readings

The following are suggested but are not required.

The following book is a classic, which explores the design of objects such as light switches, telephones, stoves, doors, etc. from a psychological perspective.

Donald Norman - The Design of Everyday Things
(Previously published as "The Psychology of Everyday Things")
257 pages Reissue edition (March 1990)
Currency/Doubleday; ISBN: 0385267746

This more recent book is somewhat advanced but excellent, challenging many dogmas of current interface design.

The Humane Interface
Addison Wesley 2000
Jef Raskin ISBN 0-2-1-37937-6

This is a collection of review/survey/tutorial articles about HCI. It is a reference book, and can be found in the Hamilton Library reference center. I also have a copy in my lab, where you may browse it.
