Outages of 02/12-02/13

Blackboard was down overnight; we briefly had a password on the code discussion site: both problems have been fixed.

NO MORE NEWS HERE

I'm having to update news in too many places. Henceforth I won't put routine news here. It will only appear in the Blackboard announcements. I will use this space only for announcements about Blackboard being down, or very critical stuff. However, I will continue to update the schedule and assignments on this web site.

01/28

Assignment 1 is due by midnight rather than before class. I won't discuss the solution until the next Monday. 20% off per day for late.

01/22

Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 has been posted.

I've also added some links to Blackboard. I decided to not duplicate content between Blackboard and this web site. Instead, wherever possible, Blackboard will simply reference this web site. However, you do need to use Blackboard regularly to participate in discussions, check for materials in the drop box, and upload your assignment.

01/16

Once you are enrolled via Pa'e (and have paid your tuition), you should be able to access the course. Go to http://blackboard.hawaii.edu:80/ and log in with firstname_lastname as user name and SSN as password, in both cases with special characters and spaces removed. You may find detailed instructions (by another faculty member) for getting into blackboard at http://blackboard.hawaii.edu/x/welcome.html .

Once we get everyone in we will be using BB for all communication.

For those who missed today's class: I did a demo of Blackboard, and then showed two Scheme environments. Dr. Scheme is good for beginners and MIT's Scheme, including Edwin, for more advanced students. (Edwin is like emacs.) Before next Wednesday you should install both of these environments (see Resources menu to the right), try them out, and pick the one best for you. I also demonstrated various emacs commands which I will try to write up soon. Finally, I demonstrated the Mindstorms visual programming environment for Lego Robotics, to broaden our view of what a programming language can be.

01/14

There is a waiting list to get in the course. Email suthers@hawaii.edu with details including your SSN, expected graduation date, and effect this has on that date.

We have a brief organizational meeting in MSB (Ocean) 114. On Wednesday 01/16 we will cover Ch. 1-2 and discuss the format of the course in more detail. We may also have a demonstration of a visual programming language.

End.
